28/11/2022 Artificial Intelligence in the world of graphics and illustrations
We’ve understood from the expressions on the faces of our graphic designers that the penetration of graphics by Artificial Intelligence leads to deep reflection: can it replace a Designer?
AI is present in all applications and services revolving around the digital world, impacting even the analog one: facial recognition, voice reproduction, talking and thinking appliances, message reading, notifications, and now even image creation from just a single sentence.
Many believe that AI is a solution to various problems, while others see it as a threat, convinced that it will dominate the world and absorb a significant portion of current professions. Surely, there will come a time when the alignment between education and digital evolution will be unavoidable, but that’s a whole other story.
Let’s return to Artificial Intelligence as it stands, avoiding falling inexorably into the futuristic and dystopian black hole of human evolution: singularity.
So, AI undoubtedly enhances the speed of various businesses by allowing the processing of enormous amounts of data in a very short time. Essentially, time savings and resource optimization are the two significant advantages.
What does all this mean for the world of communication and graphics? It means having an excellent partner! It’s the approach to things, not the things themselves, that change the outcome. AI should be seen as an opportunity to create original and current content, a tool that serves the creativity, personality, and originality of its user, not the other way around. The same goes for graphic design tools like Canva, which are currently riding high: knowing how to use it is not enough to define creative and tasteful graphics.
The Creative Revolution Underway
Some time ago, a discussion was opened: referring to OpenAI’s technology called DALL-E 2, The Verge considered DALL-E “could kick off a creative revolution.”
For the uninitiated, DALL-E is a form of artificial intelligence that, based on verbal information, draws from a database of hundreds of millions of images to create graphics. DALL-E constructs the final product pixel by pixel, giving rise to a completely new and original output.
Currently, it’s the way information is imbued and provided to AI that determines the final outcome achieved. For this reason, in agreement with The Verge, we believe we are on the cusp of a creative revolution in which the role of graphic designers emerges not defeated but, on the contrary, empowered.
In the second episode of Lime Time – the podcast produced by Pindarica – our graphic designers, Daniele and Lorenzo, will put themselves to the test. Actually, they will put AI to the test. If you’re curious, find the episode on our Youtube channel LimeTime and on Spotify in the audio version.
Feel free to leave your comments if you’d like to add something to the discussion or if you think we missed something.
Until next time!
